Thomas Keller’s Awesome Egg Sandwich

You'll need these for the sandwich!

You’ll need these for the sandwich!

Have you ever seen the movie Spanglish?

Adam Sandler flick?  The one where he’s a chef?  Hello?  Have I lost you already?

I don’t think it was a huge hit, but it did have one thing going for it – a great scene of food porn, sandwich style.

The famous Thomas Keller was the food consultant on Spanglish.  In one scene, Adam Sandler’s chef character came home from a long day in the restaurant and made himself a sandwich.  Thomas Keller’s job was to make that sandwich look luscious.  And he did a very, very good job.

Here’s the DVD extra showing Keller teaching Sandler how to make and assemble the sandwich.  (Amazingly, I couldn’t find a clip online of Sandler making the sandwich in the movie.  I thought EVERYTHING was on the Internet.)

Thomas Keller’s Egg Sandwich

  • 4 thick slices of bacon
  • Monterey Jack cheese
  • 2 thick slices of rustic white bread
  • mayo
  • 4 vine-ripened tomato slices
  • 2 butter lettuce leaves
  • butter
  • 2 eggs
  • salt

Directions:

  • Cook bacon till crisp.  Drain on paper towels.
  • Toast bread. Spread one piece with mayo.  Top with bacon (make sure you line it up right!) and tomato.  Add salt.  Put a layer of cheese on the other piece of bread and toast until melted.
  • While cheese is melting, fry egg in butter.  Don’t overcook – yolk should be runny.
  • Slide runny-yolk egg onto tomato.  Top with lettuce. Close sandwich with the hot cheese toast, cheese side down.
  • Slice in two with a sharp knife and admire the awesome-ness.  Eat immediately.

Crazy good, right?  I hope you make it and love it!

I must confess since we don’t eat bacon I’ve never eaten this EXACT sandwich.  I have seen other people eat it, however.  My oh my.  The look on their faces after the first bite.

Since I wanted that look on MY face, I created our own veggie version.

Stop back next week for a recipe for the second best egg sandwich in the world!

  1. I think this recipe seriously cries out for fresh tomatoes from your garden which unfortunately only happens to us in Colorado in late August and early September.

    • Yeah, you’re right. Traditional supermarket tomatoes in winter would ruin this. Vine ripened is the only way to go. Costco sells them. So does Whole Foods. Not always cheap, but necessary!

  2. And why the heck, doesn’t my dang picture show?????

  4. Sounds delicious! Love bacon, but I’m having a hard time eating chicken…
    Probably because I don’t own a pig.

  5. I’m going to remember this when I harvest the first tomatoes from my garden this summer (that’s really the only time I eat bacon, on a fresh summer tomato BLT). This sandwich sounds amazing to change things up a bit!
