The Leaves Are Here! The Leaves Are Here!

We had one of those perfect fall days last week.  Not too warm, but the glorious sunshine made everything glow.  I pulled up the last of the tomato plants—a freeze earlier in the week did them in.  Then I putzed around and made a list of the things I haven’t done to finish winterizing the sheds, coops and barnyard.  It was a long list, but doable.

I think fall is the animals’ favorite time of year.  Not too cold, not too hot.  That’s good.  But the leaves?  Oh, now that’s GREAT!  Very Excellent Husband Don did the first of many raking sessions and hauled all the leaves into the barnyard.  The excitement was over the top.

Let the munching begin!

Let the munching begin!

This is the tip of the leaf iceberg—that pile will be five times bigger soon. But what a wonderful start!

Sniff, nibble, sniff, nibble.

Sniff, nibble, sniff, nibble.

This is Sambuca’s first year here in the fall.  He started out slow.

I'll be over here around the edges...

I’ll be over here around the edges…

But soon he dove in like the others.

Oh man, this is awesome!

Oh man, this is awesome!

Little Sammy knows to keep an eye on Brandy, who usually spends less time munching and more time trying to keep everyone else away from the food. (Give it up, Brandy, ok?)  But even Brandy was too excited by the leaves to be bossy.

Must. Keep. An. Eye. On. Everyone.

Must. Keep. An. Eye. On. Everyone.  Oh, I give up!

Yes Brandy, there's enough for everyone, and more where those came from!

Yes Brandy, there’s enough for you all and more where those came from!

The goats, being the browsers they are, of course love the leaves.  But Doink’s joy is, well, very joyous.  His happiness is compounded by the apples that VEH Don threw in when he was raking under the apple tree.  That pig loves apples.  He rooted around and found every single one.

Going...going...

Going…going…

GONE!

GONE!

Um, you've got a few crumbs on your lip, big man.

Um, you’ve got a few crumbs on your lip, big man.

I hope enjoying autumn in your neck of the woods makes you as happy as a pig in…leaves 🙂

  1. I love your goat photos, so cute!

  2. Wonderful accounting of fall on your little piece of heaven! I love your writing style and the pictures are wonderful! I feel like I know all of your animals.

  3. I too have a pot bellied pig…”Boaris”. He is currently enjoying all the acorns that are falling down here in central Texas. All of my “children” are happy it is fall…finally! Happy autumn to you and yours!

  4. Ah, to be able to live in the moment!

  5. I didn’t know goats and pigs ate fall leave? Good recycling 🙂

  6. Ah, the joy & excitement of seasonal changes.
Your photos allow me to ‘smell’ the faint muskiness of decaying leaves and to ‘feel’ the curiosity of your foraging friends!

  8. Can I borrow Doink and company? My apple tree is dumping loads of leaves and unharvested fruit right now and we don’t have enough room in the compost pile! Isn’t it fun when you can actually see pure joy in an animal’s face – absolutely precious! Thanks for the wonderful pictures.

  9. My chickens love rootling about in the leaves too, in fact your post has just made me think that I should gather up all those that have fallen outside their run and take them in. I was only thinking this morning the chooks look a bit bored at the moment. Leaves will keep them happy for hours. Problem solved – thank you!

  10. Your pig is just like my friend’s pig, Blaze. He’s a sweetie… you know, for a pig lol. Also he has a thing for people’s ankles, and he has no idea how big he actually is now, so you gotta be careful at their house or you’ll get knocked over by a snout!

  11. I just love this post and your animals are gorgeous. I especially like the pig, we keep pigs and they can be very cute, except when they are in the garden. I would love it if you would share this post at Good Morning Mondays at Darling Downs Diaries. Thanks and blessings

  12. How fun! It’s not “leaves” season here just yet but hopefully soon! My 16yr old just bought a truck and he’s supposed to be on leaf duty whenever he goes to town. He’d rather haul leaves than rake them. Our chickens and garden love them. Thanks so much for sharing at Simple Lives Thursday; hope to see you again this week!
