There’s lots of different ways people know spring is in the air. Around here, it’s when Lucy leaves the warmth of the other chickens in the coop and returns to where she prefers to sleep—the goat shed. And that’s exactly where I found her when I went to lock everyone up for the evening. Spring is coming!
Then today, I went out to open up the coops and EVERYONE came spilling out. Usually, the older ladies hang back and remain on the roosts for a while, moving slowly and forgoing the morning scratch treats. Today, they ran out to get their fair share of the scratch like, well, spring chickens. Yippee!
There’s this, too. Spring is not all beautiful.
Ah, but then there’s Big Man the rooster. He has a serious case of spring fever and it’s not the pleasant kind. A few times, I’ve had to run out and intervene when he was blazing a trail of terror in the barnyard. Mostly, he’s just out there showing off, struttin’ his stuff and generally making everyone uncomfortable.
It’s working. Napoleon spends most of the day putting distance between himself and Big Man, avoiding the inevitable confrontation when can. The ladies don’t make eye contact.
It must be exhausting, this absurd behavior.
I’m hoping he’ll calm down. Although I gotta say, he’s fun to watch!
I hope you’re seeing a bit of spring, even if it’s a little crazy, wherever you are 🙂

You are brave to have roosters!
I LOVE them 🙂

You wouldn’t see a pig with such strange behaviour now would you? … Your roos are both very handsome though. We have much the same at the moment – roosters’ hormones running amok, hens trying to keep their distance (and starting to lay more eggs, yaaay!) and a *lot* of mud. Hoping you’re right and that Spring is just around the corner.

The patterns of all of those chicken feet in all of that mud…so crazy!
What a hoot! He is certainly entertaining, huh? I’ll bet they are so glad to see the sun shining!

It is shining and we are all in hog (Doink!) heaven!
Well Big Man certainly makes for some lovely photos, but oh Napoleon’s plumage! I can’t wait to add a rooster to my little flock. Thanks for the entertainment. Best, Kim

Great photos! We have the brown muck from the snow melting and our ducks are…. well… very busy trying to “make a family.” LOL Thanks for sharing on the (mis)Adventures Mondays Blog Hop!
