Roosters Fail, Hens Are Happy

More rooster escapades in the barnyard!  Napoleon and Big Man are beyond hilarious at this point.  The winner?  Well, it’s neither of those crazy boys.

It’s the ladies.  The ladies are DEFINITELY the winners 🙂

Here’s what happens.  Napoleon starts looking sideways at one of the ladies.  He starts doing his, “Look at me!  Look at ME!” dance and shouting out a throaty call.  The lady, regardless of his choice, starts heading in the opposite direction.  A chase ensues.  He usually gets close to catching her.

The mating call of the domesticated rooster.

A warm-up cock-a-doodle-doo gets the action started.

Ready or not, here I come!

Ready or not, here I come!

But who comes running across the barnyard to intervene?  Yep.  Big Man.  He’s all like, “OH NO YOU DON’T!” and crashes into Napoleon, knocking him into next week.

Here I come to save the day!

Look at my manly chicken muscles!

And then, about two minutes later, the same thing happens again…in reverse.  Big Man eyes a lady and heads toward her, only to be knocked silly by Napoleon.

The ladies can’t believe their luck.

Maude's beautiful crown of feathers remain untouched by rowdy roosters. She seems relieved.

I'll just sit right here and mind my own business!

Lucy, calm as usual, sits on the sidelines and watches the craziness.

I have taken about a million photos of the rooster chase and knocking silly-ness—all of them horribly blurry.  I’ll keep on trying— and ask for photo lessons for Christmas 🙂

  3. Ha! Roos are the same the world over, it seems! Your pics are great – chickens are so horribly difficult to photograph – they always move at just the wrong time. 🙂

  4. Chivalry is alive and well in your barnyard I see. Napoleon is gorgeous too. My last go around of chicks has given us a roo and I’m looking forward to some of the antics to come. Great pics, bummer about the cold weather… I know not your favorite.

  5. Roosters never tire of fighting. I always wondered why they can not share but I guess that is out of the question :).

I read on another blog that you are a vegetarian, so what do you do with the birds and animals that you raise?

    • I love ’em and let them live what I hope is a long and happy life hanging out in the barnyard. They are my pets, just like my dog. Except they don’t sleep in the house 🙂

  6. What a hoot to watch! Love the story and the pics 🙂 Stopping by from Farm Blog Hop.

  7. I think you need to have a long talk with those boys – teach them how to play nice! I’m sure the hens are more amused about the whole thing than anyone! 😀

  8. We ended up getting two “whoopsie” roosters last spring. Now, the boys are over a year old and the random beat-downs seem to have calmed down. We still get a random feathers-flying-WWE-worthy wrestling match, but Hershey Bar sits happily at the top, adored by his batch of ladies, while Boot has his smaller harem of women and finally, Luka falling in line with his remaining groupies.

Now, my drakes? UGH. DUCKS. >.<

  9. This is great, just sounds like a lot of fun. thanks for sharing, blessings

  10. So funny! We had 3 roosters and we “lost” one this past spring. Then a couple of weeks ago my son said, “Hey, Costello (we have Abott and Cogburn also) is with those chickens down the road.” Sure enough he got tired of being #3 and went and found his own little heram. Thanks for sharing with us at Simple Lives Thursday; hope to see you again this week.
