While all the other ladies are struttin’ their Sunday best in the spring sunshine, poor Thelma is molting. For you non-chicken owners out there, many chickens shed from a few to almost all of their feathers from time to time. It’s like having a bad hair day for around two months – bummer, huh?
I guess it’s unusual for chickens to molt in the spring. Usually their feathers fly in the fall when they’ve been laying eggs like crazy all summer and their bodies take a break.
But not Thelma. She’s marching to the beat of a different drummer.
Rock on, girlfriend. You’ll be lookin’ purty again soon.

Awww poor Thelma! At least it’s not a really bad molt. She’ll be looking so pretty when all her new feathers come in 🙂

She’s still scraggly now, but you’re right – she’ll be ready for summer parties soon!

I was searching for this week’s Down Home linky and found last week’s with Thelma’s pic. I feel so much better for reading this. I have an Isa Brown going through exactly this at the moment (I am a new chicken owner) but it is Autumn here in Australia. She has gone off lay and I am sure she has lost weight too. I will link up my post to this week’s DH when it is posted and you can stop by to see another fellow feather flyer!

I’ll definitely stop by! Molting is hard to watch – those poor hens look so miserable. But they’re lovely again in no time!
