So, if you’ve liked The Chicken Mama on Facebook, you know that I’ve got a renegade chicken in the flock. It’s Lucy, my 6 month old White Leghorn, sister to Ethel.
A few nights ago, on my end-of-the-evening check at about 9pm, the head count in the coop revealed a chicken was missing. I knew it was either Lucy or Ethel, but in my rush to search for the missing hen, I didn’t spend too much time trying to figure out which one it was – SOMEBODY WAS MISSING!
Keela was put inside, the spotlight was grabbed and Very Excellent Husband Don and I headed out to find the missing girl. After a few frantic minutes, I looked on top of the coop. Not there. But higher up, on the platform of the kids’ long abandoned treehouse, was Lucy.
In the morning she was strutting around, Ethel at her side, like nothing unusual had happened.
Next night, same thing. I guess she’s decided roosting in the coop with all the other ladies is not for her.
The NEXT night, I grabbed my handy dandy Flip video camera and sat outside to watch how and when she does it. At about 7:30pm, I saw this…

Then I spend most of the next two days re-learning how to edit in iMovie and learning how to embed a video in a blog post. Apparently you CAN teach an old dog new tricks – it just takes a while.
We’ll see if Lucy keeps up this very un-chicken like behavior. I know Ethel is lonely on the ground without her. I’ve got to believe with cold weather approaching she will soon come to her senses.
I’ll keep you posted 🙂 (Ha! A little blog humor!)

Hi! I’m wondering if Lucy is safe up there from … uh …. everything??? Hope so.
Love your blog.
She was up there and all tucked in for the night when we came in way past dusk tonight. Her pal Ethel was resigned to sleeping in a nesting box – Lucy is her protector in the pecking order. It’s not particularly safe, but it’s her choice!

Hi Joan,
Great video. You may find that this hen settles down when she moves from pullet to hen. I have one that was similar to this and I trimmed her flight feathers to keep her from running around the neighborhood.
Regards,
CB
CB, I hope she does change her ways! I’m thinking the first time the snow flies she’ll be back in the coop in a hurry 🙂
Crazy girl!

It’s nothing but crazy girls around here! That’s what makes us special!
The lightweight girls can really fly! We have a California White pullet and she has been flying everywhere lately. She is almost exactly like a White Leghorn but has a smattering of gray feathers on her back. We ended up clipping her feathers on one wing so she couldn’t escape anymore!

I think it’s interesting how Lucy is a flyer and Ethel isn’t. Such different personalities! As long as that’s the only place she flies, I’m going to let her. She seems so proud of herself!
