Yesterday just before I took off for work I looked out back and saw Ethel in the yard again. Deep sigh. They have such a nice barnyard. The grass is NOT greener on the other side, damn it! I usually always go out and put them back over the fence when I see them in the yard, but I was running late and skipped it.
When I got back she had returned her bad self back over the fence. “Thank you, Ethel,” I said. “You’re a good hen when you’re not acting like Lucy and flying all over the place.”
Then I got down to doing chores. Fill up the waters, gather the eggs from the nesting boxes, replenish the hay…
And look what I found in the hay bin.
One perfect white egg. From my Ethel.
Today I was home to watch. Yep, she flew over the fence. I caught her, walked her into the coop and introduced her to the nesting boxes. That didn’t last long. Again, over the fence. Persistent girl.
Then she busted out an AWESOME I-Laid-An-Egg-Song.
I have so missed white eggs. It’s been over a year since my sweet, sweet Scout went to the chicken coop in the sky. My egg basket always looked a little sad without her white eggs.
With lots of hens still molting my egg basket doesn’t quite runneth over, but it’s a wee bit prettier!
Congrats to you both…proud Mamma Joan & Ethel! Breakfast will be great tomorrow.

CB

Congrats! Still waiting for my first eggs. The girls will be 22 weeks old tomorrow. Arent they too young to molt? They don’t look scraggly like your zombie chickens (loved that post!) but Im seeing feathers in the run/coop. Is that why I’m not seeing any eggs yet? Could use some advice/encouragement. Thanks!
While I’m no expert, I think that chickens “can” start laying as early as 21 weeks, but for some it takes longer. Lucy, Ethel’s sister, isn’t laying yet. I don’t think they go through a true molt in the fall when they’re that young. Maybe someone is picking on some else? Good luck, and thanks for stopping by!
Loved that little story!! Good girl Ethel!

Hahaha – never where you expect it! My grandpa had a hen that never would lay in the nesting boxes, no matter how much coaxing he would do. She preferred the sand box! Ah well, at least the eggs were laid! Congratulations!

Ethel is a veritable Jemima Puddleduck! Maybe she want to lay her eggs and hatch them out. Do you have any snooty hens that lord their chicks over her? :o) Charlie @PickledOkra.blogspot.com
