I had a glorious afternoon in the barnyard this past week. A glorious, nutty afternoon. I started by making a to-do list then headed out into the beautiful, sunny day. First chore? Moving the rock pile. It's too close to the proposed site of the shed that will hold up the roof I bought. Not fun, but hey, I've got a cart and a strong back. How hard could it be? I didn't factor in my … [Read more...]

Road Trip
With Very Excellent Husband Don off in Italy pursuing his 60th birthday cycling trip of a lifetime, I decided to go to Durango to see Excellent Son Sawyer. Road trip! Now, I don't like traveling. I do enjoy being in other places - I just don't like getting there. I had a lot of things going for me. Durango is an awesome town. My animal/house sitters are great. VEH Don is eight time zones … [Read more...]
I Bought A Roof!
So, I have the BEST friends in the world. Hands down the best friends. Ever. On my daily Craigslist search for whatever looks good, I recently found...a roof. A roof advertised to be constructed of intentionally rusted, not galvanized, metal. A 7.5' by 10' roof. Well built, by a professional carpenter. And I thought, I might need a roof, and this one is quite nice. Calls were made, deals … [Read more...]
I’m Baaack!
Well, it was quite the week working the Denver County Fair! I'm still decompressing and wrapping up loose ends, but I've now got all the extra paper (I think I killed a whole forest with the paperwork) recycled and the rest filed. There's a nice neat pile of extra supplies ready to take to storage. A few more e-mails, finalizing the expense report, debriefing meetings with bosses and crew and … [Read more...]
My Gardening Confession
My name is Joan, and I'm a gardening failure. There. I've said it. Do you think less of me now? Lordy, I hope not. I try and I try, and hope springs eternal every March, but I simply cannot find the gardening love. This year was going to be different! Even though I professed my previous gardening failures, I jumped in with both feet and made a hoop cold frame and got seeds in the … [Read more...]
Why I Love Summer
The Summer Solstice has come and gone. It is both my favorite and least favorite day of the year. My favorite because it's the longest day of the year. My least favorite because now the days start getting shorter. In my perfect world, summer would be be nine months long followed by one month of fall, one month of a snowy winter and one month of spring. I love summer. Everything about … [Read more...]
My Memorial Day
This is a story about my dad. I spent most of my youth as an only child of a single parent. When I was fifteen, Mom met a man, an Army man. They got married when I was sixteen. SIXTEEN. I was not at my best when I was sixteen. Not by a long shot. I. Was. Horrible. But this man, this man in the Army. This man had patience. He overlooked my extreme ass-hole-ness. He was probably the … [Read more...]
