Doink and The Goats

Doink the pig and Brandy the goat were raised together from birth and came to Happy Mama Acre in 2012. We're pretty sure they don't know they're not the same species. Doink is our resident curmudgeon/comedian. For this we are eternally grateful. We affectionately refer to them as "the poats".

Jessie arrived at the barnyard a year later. I thought Brandy would appreciate a playmate. I was wrong. A year later, I got Sammy and Kenny. Because you can never have enough goats!

Partners in Crime

Here at Happy Mama Acre, we are tired.  We need a nap. Lots of great things going on, but it's all happening at the same time and I'm having a hard time keeping up. I'm working a big job (Competitions Director for the Denver County Fair) that will definitely be the focus of my life for the next month.  Posts may drop off, but I swear I'll be back and ready to share in … [Read more...]

A Goat By Any Other Name

First, an update.  We're a little over a week with our beautiful new baby goat.  And things are getting better. Not as fast as I'd like, but then that's my ongoing lesson in patience. Amazingly enough, AFTER I decided Brandy needed a friend and I brought this little guy home, I remembered that Brandy had practically never seen another goat.  If I remember the story right, her mom died soon … [Read more...]

You Can’t Always Get What You Want

In the perfect world in my head, here's what I imagined I would be writing now: "We picked up our beautiful new baby goat in the late afternoon. By the time we got home the sky was aglow with a beautiful sunset.  We opened the barnyard gate and coaxed the little guy inside.  Brandy immediately came over, gave him a sniff then licked his head and proclaimed he was her little guy now.  She draped … [Read more...]

SWG (Single White Goat) Seeks Same

Oh, Brandy.  Brandy, Brandy, Brandy.  You have been quite the feisty one lately.  You jockey for my attention when I'm in the barnyard, you chase the chickens, and poor Doink gets head-butted all day long. I think you, little girl,  need a playmate. Maybe she's been asking for a friend for a while.   Maybe I just haven't been listening.  I knew when Doink and Brandy showed up on my … [Read more...]

A Summer Barnyard Story

This is mostly a story in pictures.  I didn't write my usual post on Sunday because I've been juggling too many balls and dropping a few.  I couldn't figure out why.  But then it hit me on my tenth trip between my computer (I usually work in the kitchen) and my printer (in a back bedroom). It's summer.  It's finally, FINALLY HOT.  I just wanted to be outside.  So I got all my scanning and … [Read more...]

Onward and Upward

When I wrote this post about Doink, I had no idea what the future would hold for my sweet pig.  I was truly scared. His physical recovery took around two weeks.  His front hoof bled on and off for three full days.  He limped for ten days.  His mouth, which I didn't even know was injured from the tooth saw, healed but still looks tender.  I didn't see him munching on grass in the early morning … [Read more...]

Was I Wrong?

This is one of the hardest post I've ever written. I've written about almost dying, giving up a dog I love dearly, and re-homing the world's nicest but noisiest rooster. This, currently, feels worse.  And it's about a pig.  An animal that many people don't think twice about eating for breakfast.  But Doink the pot-bellied pig is MY pig.  And nobody is eating him for breakfast. I do my … [Read more...]

Shelter From the Storm

All this snow and cold weather we've been having has been hard on the animals - and the humans as well. Yesterday, it snowed for 24 hours straight. On May 1st.  I'm emotionally exhausted.  I find myself saying stupid things and being contrary for no reason at all.  I want spring. Brandy the goat has been contrary, too.  Poor Doink has been enduring more than his share of head butts. Then she'll … [Read more...]
