Unlike those of you on the east coast, our snow here in the foothills of Colorado has melted. Our three feet of white stuff is gone. The barnyard is all dormant grass, and not even mucky anymore.
Why? Because we have WIND.
We’ve had it on and off for five days. It sounds like a freight train out there, with gusts of over 60mph, especially in the night and early mornings. During the day, the still-bare trees are constantly bending and swaying.
The sub-zero cold was hard on everyone and everything. I bundled up and ran out to the barnyard and then back inside to the warmth of the house. The bedding straw in the shed was measured in feet. Shed and coop heaters were on 24/7. I shoveled and shoveled and shoveled. All I wanted was warmer weather.
Well, it IS warmer and I’m pretty sure those sub zero temps are behind us. We still have loads of snow ahead, but that blinding cold is gone.
I feel like I made a deal with the devil. No more extreme cold. Only this godawful wind. Deals with the devil are…bad.
Wind is so disconcerting. I can’t think. I can’t concentrate. I’m constantly worried that a fence is going to blow down. The milk jugs I fill with water every day are scattered to the four corners of the yard. Keela’s dog bed is who knows where. Straw flies around like a kid blowing bubbles. I cannot sleep.
The chickens have gone into huddle mode.
Instead of being scattered around the yard, they move in groups and use the structures in the barnyard as wind breaks.
You can hear gusts coming and they roar through the trees.
Looks like the weekend is going to be better – less wind, more sun. I know a few chickens that are gonna be some kind of happy! Not to mention a certain chicken mama 🙂

I feel for ya! Years ago we moved to Idaho from California. Our first day there the wind blew so hard the window broke and blew into the house and hit me on the back of my head as I was sitting on the couch. Welcome to Idaho! The guy that came to fix it said I was lucky I wasn’t decapitated.
OMG! That is no good!
Isn’t that what we always do, I know I definitely do – in the winter I am complaining about how cold it is and in the summer when it is 90 I am complaining about how hot it is. Mother nature is probably yelling at me to make up my mind. Hope the wind settles down for you, we still have snow on the ground here.

Ha ha! I’m never complaining in the summer time – unless the wind is blowing!
If it’s not one thing, it’s another! Too bad mother nature just can’t be kind to us right now. She must be really angry this year haha. I hope the wind dies down for you guys soon. It’s gotta be stressful worrying about fences falling down!

Yeah, I feel like Mother Nature has me in time out right now 🙂
You guys sure seem to be getting one extreme weather situation after another. Fingers crossed things mellow a bit for all of you and all fences stay up, yikes!

Yes – and we got another blast today – crazy winds and the temp dropped 30 degrees in a little more than an hour!
I definitely feel for you. Where I live in the desert we get that wind. Every.three.days. You can set your watch by it. It blows for three or four days then we get a break for a couple days then the wind is back. It’s alright in the summer because it gives us a break from the 115 degree days and the air conditioner can stay off.
But! I loathe the wind. Absolutely drives me BATTY. I’ve heard there is a place where the wind literally blows all the time and the inhabitants go insane from it. I completely believe that.

Thanks Lori!
Thanks for sharing on Tuesdays with a Twist. I’m with you on this. I do try to do fun winter activities so it won’t seem so endless and dreary and inconvenient, but right around late February, it becomes endless and dreary and inconvenient no matter what. Can’t wait for spring!

Ha! That’s a riot! Love the one of the chicks scrambling for cover! Hope things have calmed down by now! Thanks for joining us with your outdoor post on The Maple Hill Hop today!

I hate wind. Sustained high winds usually mean we will be without power. I hope yours calms soon and your fences hold. We are in another arctic blast and the snow is still so deep that the fences are irrelevant. I’ll be glad to see this winter go.

It has been harsh, hasn’t it? I can’t imagine snow that deep – scary!
I enjoyed reading this post and feel for you – the gate blown off and the concrete bird bath on it side really speak volumes as to how intense that wind is (and I’m with you on milk jug scattering)! Hope it dies down before farm animals start blowing away!
Welcome, Lila! It comes and goes – right now it is a gorgeous, still, crisp morning with a bit of new snow on the ground. Yippee!
It is windy and COLD here.
Love the goat ears 🙂 My Tunis ears do the same thing.
